Artist Spotlight: Morgan Taylor

With “Outside That’s Periodt,” Morgan Taylor delivers a soundtrack for self-assurance, sisterhood, and unapologetic joy. The single marks another milestone in her rapidly growing career as she continues to establish herself as one of R&B’s most promising voices.

In this exclusive Q&A, Morgan Taylor opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.

BH Review: What inspired you to become a musician?

Morgan Taylor: The first time I sang on stage was in church when I was nine years old. That was the moment I realized music was my life! That it is what I truly loved and wanted to do for the rest of my life. Growing up listening to the music my parents played inspired me deeply. Artists like Whitney Houston, Usher, Mint Condition and Mariah Carey were on heavy rotation in the car and in the crib. Those life soundtrack moments made me fall in love with music even more.

BH Review: Do you have a favorite album or artist that influences your work?

Morgan Taylor: I’ve had many artists who’ve influenced me creatively throughout my musical journey. In the beginning, Whitney Houston was my biggest inspiration: her powerful voice, vocal emotion, and stage presence shaped the foundation of my artistry. As I’ve continued to grow and evolve, Beyoncé has become my greatest influence—pushing me to embrace high standards/excellence, versatility, and confidence in my craft. Chris Brown and Kehlani are also major inspirations for me now, both for their artistry and the way they connect deeply with their audiences through their lyrics, performances and authenticity.

BH Review: What's the most important thing to you when creating new music?

Morgan Taylor: With my music, I always want my audience to feel something. My goal is to be relatable by being vulnerable, telling my story, and being my authentic self. I especially want to speak to women when it comes to self-love, healing, and growth.

BH Review: What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your career so far?

Morgan Taylor: My biggest challenge so far: figuring out how I want to represent myself as an artist. In a world where branding is always the conversation and you’re made to feel as though your in competition, attending Berklee College of Music and being surrounded by so many talented artists and musicians—who seemed to have found their artistic identities—made me question my own. At times, that took a toll but I’ve learned that discovering who you are as an artist & a person takes time, patience, and development. It is an evolving process. Looking back, I truly appreciate that challenge because it helped me grow and better understand myself and my artistry. I came away with a clear understanding of who I am: Morgan Taylor, HighonMorgan & Big Mo. They’re all me!!!

BH Review: What inspires your songwriting? Do you draw from personal experiences or fictional stories?

Morgan Taylor: My personal life, girl talk with my friends, and things going on in the world really inspire my creativity! When I find a beat, I mean that perfect beat, that’s when things start flowing. I pull my ideas from journal entries. I want the lyrics to feel confessional. As if you are looking over my shoulder at what I’ve written, what I feel and where I’m coming from.

BH Review: Who is your dream collaborator or artist to work with?

Morgan Taylor: I would love to collaborate with either Kehlani or Chris Brown, they’re both my type of artists. They consistently drop bangers every year and always keep me on my toes with their creativity and versatility.

BH Review: How do you engage with your fans online and offline? Do you have any favorite social media platforms or strategies for connecting with them?

Morgan Taylor: Whenever I post, my supporters always leave the kindest messages. I love responding, showing love back, and connecting with them through DMs or reposting their content. Building that genuine connection with my audience means a lot to me. My fans are a part of the “The Big Mo Family”.  Big Mo is my alter ego. The “Big Mo Family” is incredibly supportive, spicy, stands on business and is not afraid to show love and be loved! I think my new favorite social media platform and the place where I’ve had the greatest growth is YouTube. I’ve gone from about 300 subs to 8500 in a year. It’s become the place where I can really showcase my music and myself! I can struggle with shyness; I’m a bit of an introvert, but I also have this “Big Mo” side that can be sassy and even a little naughty. YouTube has been a place where all of my sides can show up and be received.

BH Review: How do you prioritize feedback from fans and use it to inform your creative decisions or future projects?

Morgan Taylor: For my latest release, I did a social media poll asking my followers what should be my next release. Whether I should drop “Outside That’s PeriodT” or another song called “Cut Off”. I had genuine interaction in the comments, and the winner was “Outside That’s PeriodT”. It was really cool to see how engaged everyone was and how much they connected with the songs. Most people were torn and even said to drop them both at the same time. That kind of connection and response from listeners & fans is invaluable. It tells me that I’m creating something that people enjoy and connect with.

BH Review: Can you tell us about a project or initiative that combines music with social impact or activism?

Morgan Taylor: "Ain't Goin' Back" was released in 2024. It’s an R&B/soul track with a powerful message of freedom and empowerment. The core theme is a declaration of freedom, a rejection of regression, and a commitment to moving forward. The hook states: "On God I ain't going back" and "Set free no chains attached." The lyrics touch upon themes of social justice, standing up for freedom, and honoring the struggle of previous generations ("I grieve with the sounds of saints that spoke peace to the rounds that was aimed at... I stand tall in the front line for our freedom"). It has a declarative tone of resolve that I stand on the shoulders of some powerful soldiers who have fought for human rights and spoke truth to power. The song features a modern R&B production and soulful vocals, but I tried to deliver an empowering and determined vibe when I sang it. My YouTube video highlights "Black Girl Magic”, I’m rocking the t-shirt."

I’ve always stood for female empowerment and encouraging young women to never allow any man or anyone to tear them down. I released my first EP, back in January, entitled Love Bombed (Love, Loss, and Lessons), which tells the story of a relationship journey. By the end of that journey, I want my listeners to come to understand and realize their worth. That you are the prize! My new song Outside That’s PeriodT really reflects that moment of walking away, choosing yourself, and taking care of your own peace. I want listeners to feel empowered after hearing my EP or any of my singles—to know that self-love is the strongest kind of love.

BH Review: Can you tell us about a particularly memorable fan interaction or story that stands out in your mind?

Morgan Taylor: My favorite fan moment was when I sang the national anthem for the St. Louis City Soccer Team. I met another little girl named Morgan. She was the sweetest, and that moment truly touched my heart. It reminded me why I do what I do and how powerful music can be in creating meaningful connections. Every time I sing the national anthem at a major sporting event, I can feel the patriotism and the pride afterwards. People come up and complement me. They want to take pictures and shake my hand. I know the reason is because we had a connection at that moment, even though there were 20,000+ people in the stadium. Music is an incredible way to break down barriers and to create a collective connection.
