ST. LOUIS - With more than 100K streams, Kpistol Columbus is known for his ability to weave a story with witty wordplay in his hard-hitting trap songs. The six-track EP “Bar Alert” showcases why Columbus is a rising artist to watch.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Columbus was at the center of hip hop, and its influences created the musician he is today. Columbus’ style is the perfect mix of hip hop that begins with the beat, combining East Coast and West Coast sounds.
“It really depends on the beat,” said Kpistol Columbus. “Where the beat takes me or how the beat makes me feel. Whatever it is saying, I need to come in and boom.”
In addition to Columbus’ high-energy beats, he weaves a deep meaning in the background that is present for every song. The typical Columbus style starts slow while luring listeners in, and then he drops the gauntlet with rapid trap lyrics.
“Bar Alert” was released in 2021, but Columbus is sure the EP will attract much attention due to its streaming success. “I have bars, and I can make good songs that have meaning. These are some classic songs that everyone should hear,” said Columbus.
The lead track of “Bar Alert” is “Gun 2 Yo Head,” a hardcore banger that represents Columbus to the core. “The beat was telling me to bring it to a different level. This one will stick with you to the core because it’s real lyrics, and there’s nothin’ imaginary about it,” he explained.
Columbus is not referring to an actual gun to someone’s head. He uses a gun as a metaphor representing pressure from all his music industry doubters. “Gun 2 Yo Head” is a motivational masterpiece with bars that slap and unforgettable melodies that stick in your mind.
“I.N.I.N was inspired by Jay-Z’s “D.O.A.” (Death of Auto-Tune), Columbus takes the original song to new heights. “Jay-Z’s song was the vehicle, and it took me a little further. I really like the feel of his song, so I made my own remake,” he said.
With a great storyline and underlying meaning, “I.N.I.N” brings back the original hip-hop sound while incorporating today’s toughness. “Some people still like to hear original hip hop that the MC is spitting and speaking of himself and talking positive, like LL Cool J’s ‘Mama Said Knock You Out.’ I deliver that,” he said.
With music videos and more releases to hit all streaming platforms, Columbus is proof that hard work and honing your craft leads to success. “I’m just from the ’hood like anybody else,” he said. “Things can happen in your life, but long as you stay focused on what you believe in, anything is possible.”
