Aspiring Afro Beats artist Fatai William releases sexually charged single Japata

DENVER, Colo. — Born in Lagos, Nigeria, the up and coming Afro Beats artist Fatai William spins a tale of love, emotion and loss with his latest single “Japata.”

William said Afro Beats represents the sounds of his home continent.

“It’s African music, Afro Beats is a kind of sound,” William said. “I created a sound from where I'm from, from my heart basically. I’m in the United States and I do indulge myself and do some hip hop and R&B, stuff like that, but what I majorly do is Afro Beats.”

William said he  moved to Denver in 2019 to chase his dream of becoming a professional musician after growing up in a musical family.

“My family, my cousins and all, I've been blessed to experience watching people make music growing up,” William said. “That kind of has been my medium of expression. But I wasn’t sure if it was what I wanted to do until recently, like three years ago.”

William said Japata is a sexually-charged song about love and loss and the emotions that come from a euphoric relationship that ended so fast it left him yearning for more.

“It’s about a woman and we had a good time, we had a lot of sexual time together but I lost her in the process,” William said. “It goes to where I'm feeling, I still have that experience with her but I don’t know where she is. It’s a one-night-stand situation where she kind of broke my heart.

“I felt like we had a connection but the connection didn’t move on from where we were. It’s like a sense of loss. We had a lot of good times together, but she kind of broke my heart basically.”

William said the experience with this woman left him feeling bittersweet and the song conveys a message that’s very relatable.

“This is the reason why I made the song,” he said. “I enjoyed our relationship it’s just like damn why did you do that? Why did you give me that kind of experience and leave me hanging? That kind of song.”

William said the song came to him very naturally — it only took about 30 minutes in the studio for “Japata” to come together.

“I feel like the song is original and it’s from the heart,” he said. “There’s a feel behind it and I hope people who hear it can tap into that feel. I was in the studio and my producer was playing with the sounds and I made it from scratch. I was like let me get into that, let me do that. And we just made it work.”
