Joyous Lola answers Gods call to music with jazz/R&B praise in We Worship You

God’s gifts to Joyous Lola are a low, richly beautiful voice and the musical languages of smooth jazz, R&B and gospel.

She uses those gifts in her newest release, “We Worship You,” to sing His praises.

“The jazz and the R&B,” she said, “those are the kind of songs that I’ve always liked. I’ve always liked cool music like that. We’ve had gospel music in different kinds of styles, you know, so I think God just wants to do something new through me, so people that like those kinds of songs, or that style of music, can also get blessed.

The jazz and R&B influences are clear from the start of “We Worship You.” Her expressive voice clearly worships from inside the easy sax riffs, the guitar licks and the soft jazz drums.
We lift our hands to worship you, beholding your loveliness
We raise our voices in one accord, you alone deserve our praise
We bow our knees, your majesty, in the beauty of your awesomeness
We wave our hands to bless your name, we sing our song to worship you.

Music was not her choice of a career. Lola, born in Nigeria, came to the United States as a teenager, where she became a registered nurse, a profession she follows in Dallas.

“It wasn’t something that I thought about,” she said. “I’ve always been in the church choir, growing up, but I never thought of being a singer.”

In the evangelical language of her faith, music is her calling, something she has been called to by the Holy Spirit. She has released two songs in the last few months. The first was “Amazing Love,” but a couple of years before that, under a different brand, she released a couple of Afro beat gospel songs.

Music as a calling came to her through “an encounter with Jesus.”

“It was when I went through some stuff, and I had an encounter with Jesus, and I felt like God was actually calling me into music to bring presence to his name and to share the gospel.”

That is also, she said, “when God started giving me the songs and I started writing. So, that’s how it started — from my encounters with God.”

Her music, the melodies and the lyrics, she says, “come straight from the Holy Spirit.”

“I receive it, and then I write it. It’s not like I’m just sitting and thinking in my head while I’m trying to write a song. I just let God bring me the songs and I write it down.”

With “We Worship You,” the intent is to encourage people to praise and worship God, “regardless of circumstances,” she says, referencing the apostle Paul, writing in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

“My previous song, ‘Amazing Love,’ was just basically talking about the love of Jesus, and ‘We Worship You’ is the encouragement to know about God.”

She is working on more songs. The future includes mixing pop and soul stylings into the jazz/R&B mix. Her next song will have some pop in it, but the message will always be gospel.

“All my music is going to be gospel. Everyone can listen to it. It’s something that blesses everyone, but it’s definitely Christian music.”

An album and live performances are also in the future. She has been invited to perform at Dallas area churches, and she wants to sing in other venues. Her singing has all the poise and confidence of top professionals, but, she says, she is “still a very new singer.”

She wants to carry her jazz/R&B/soul/gospel message as far as she can take it — “all over the world.”

“I want to inspire people to learn about God and encourage people through my music, whatever they’re facing or dealing with.”
