Artist Spotlight: Millennium Resorts

Music duo Millennium Resorts delivers the nostalgic new anthem, “21st Century Rocks.” Heavy on synth and guitar, the single is an ode to the 80s with modern sensibility. A musical deviation from their previous single, the anthem marks their latest exploration of sound.

In this exclusive Q&A, Millennium Resorts opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.

BH Review: How did you get started in music?

Millennium Resorts:
My (Scott) parents were music majors, and they taught piano in our house.  Jonathan’s dad played guitar.

BH Review: What inspired you to become a musician?

Millennium Resorts:
I really wanted to play the drums. A lot of people just have natural rhythm, and I was one of those people.  Jonathan picked up a guitar, and it was easy for him. Self-taught.

BH Review: Can you tell us a bit about your background and upbringing?

Millennium Resorts:
Both of us were raised pretty middle-class. Grew up listening to all kinds of music - classical ie, Beethoven, to classic rock, Led Zeppelin.

BH Review: What's your favorite memory related to music?

Millennium Resorts:
Probably releasing a full album for the first time in the past year. Sharing it with people and getting their reactions. I had a “listening party,” and there was this local band who had just taken acid. They sat and listened to the whole album front to back and said it was one of the most incredible listening experiences they’d ever had. ??? Mission accomplished.

BH Review: What's your biggest passion outside of music?

Millennium Resorts:
Faith, family, and friends. Badminton.

BH Review: How do you stay motivated and inspired?

Millennium Resorts:
Listening to the Billboard top 100 and realizing sincerely, no exaggeration, that this is the worst music that has ever been. ?

BH Review: What's your favorite song to play live?

Millennium Resorts:
Na - haven’t figured out how to produce our sound live yet.

BH Review: What's your creative process like when writing songs?

Millennium Resorts:
I (Scott) almost always try to start with the vocal melody and build the chords and structure from there. Then I’ll share it with Jonathan, and we’ll start producing it by recording the tracks. Jonathan just gets an idea he likes and builds a track from there. I give feedback and suggestions, but he’s more or less the sole author
with his tracks. I’m more collaborative.

BH Review: Do you have a favorite album or artist that influences your work?

Millennium Resorts:
Oh, deary dear. Too many. Here are a few:

Pink Floyd
mbv
pale saints
Smashing Pumpkins
Mars Volta
Nero
NIN
Radiohead
Uematsu (Final Fantasy composer)
Tame Impala
M83
Spiritualized
Kanye West
Tangerine Dream
Daft Punk

BH Review: What's the most challenging part of being a musician?

Millennium Resorts:
Finding an audience and making a living from it. There are 11 million artists on Spotify. Only 5% of those artists have more than 10000k monthly listeners. We have arrived. We are in the top 5% along with 500k other artists ?
