Artist Spotlight: Sam Welch

BH Review features Sam Welch, an innovative pop/alternative artist known for his rich vocal harmonies and introspective songwriting. Inspired by childhood memories of his grandmother’s attic, his single "The Attic" explores themes of the afterlife and personal creation. Despite challenges like tinnitus, Sam remains dedicated to his craft, emphasizing organic sound development and emotional authenticity. He aspires to collaborate with legendary artist Robbie Robertson and encourages aspiring musicians to stay patient and passionate, highlighting the importance of genuine artistry over quick success.

BH Review: What was the story or inspiration behind your single "The Attic"?

Sam Welch:
This song was inspired by memories of my grandmother's attic, which was full of all sorts of odd relics--antelope skulls, gazelle horns, etc.  I was looking for a metaphor for the next world, so I landed on the idea of the attic--representing heaven--it is of our own creation, like the attic is part of a house.

BH Review: How do you balance staying true to your artistic vision while also appealing to a broad audience?

Sam Welch: While my music is in the pop/alternative genre, I focus on rich vocal harmonization.   This is my signature sound and this is what distinguishes me from other pop/alternative artists.

BH Review: Can you share a challenging moment in your career and how you overcame it?

Sam Welch:
I developed tinnitus last year, but was able to continue making music and performing despite this frustrating condition

BH Review: What role does your personal life or experiences play in your songwriting?

Sam Welch:
Alot of my music has been inspired by the emotional struggles I have faced in my life, they have given me something to write about

BH Review: How do you stay motivated and creative during times of writer’s block or setbacks?

Sam Welch:
I limit my work in the studio to discrete time blocks to maximize efficency and creativity

BH Review: Who would you love to collaborate with in the future, and why?

Sam Welch:
I would love to work with Robbie Robertson--deceased--he created the unique, soulful, wistful music of the late 60's americana rock group The Band

BH Review: How do you approach experimenting with new sounds or genres in your music?

Sam Welch:
I try to create music that is organically created, building my instrumentals from the ground up

BH Review: What has been the most surprising or unexpected fan reaction to your work?

Sam Welch:
I'm surprised at how popular my Unitarian Hymns album has become

BH Review: How do you see technology and social media influencing your music career today?

Sam Welch:
Social media will help to spread the word about the unique genre of my music

BH Review: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians trying to break into the industry?

Sam Welch: Don't expect success overnight, and don't do it for the money!
