For our latest R&B Season Spotify playlist update, we’re shining a light on a mix of sounds from different corners of the world, each offering their own twist on the genre. Leading this week’s smaller but impressive lineup (October 3) is Leon Thomas with his new single “Just How You Are.” The track serves as the first preview from his upcoming seven-song EP PHOLKS, set to arrive on October 24.

The Brooklyn-born and Los Angeles-based singer, producer, and songwriter has been on a major run recently, fueled by the success of 2024’s MUTT and its breakout self-titled single. The album’s smooth and sometimes minimalist adult R&B sound helped push the EZMNY artist into a well-deserved spotlight.

Still, Leon knows that success isn’t just about momentum—it’s also about growth. That’s exactly what “Just How You Are” represents. He takes the soulful textures of MUTT and blends them with groovy funk-driven rhythms that give off a strong East Coast flavor.

The song brings to mind what Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak achieved with Silk Sonic, though “Just How You Are” hits with a more dynamic punch. While Silk Sonic focused on smooth sensuality, Leon’s approach feels more electrifying and direct.

That same energy carries into the song’s story, where Thomas sings about trying to win over a woman who’s distant and guarded. The tension between his persistence and her hesitation gives the track an emotional edge.

The production itself is just as captivating, setting the tone for what’s to come on PHOLKS. But Leon isn’t the only artist making noise this week. Bryson Tiller, Chase Shakur, and rising West Coast star Karri, who joined forces with Kehlani, all brought fresh, addictive tracks to the mix.

Tiller’s Solace side of his new double album has received strong praise since dropping on October 2—especially for “I Need Her.” Over a nostalgic beat from Charlie Heat, Tiller pours his heart out as he confesses how much he needs a woman more than he needs air or water.

Meanwhile, Karri and Kehlani’s “go” perfectly captures the spirit of the West Coast, mixing the bounce of hip-hop with smooth R&B melodies that sound tailor-made for a late-night drive.

Rounding out the list is Chase Shakur with “seeing red,” a track inspired by Atlanta’s hazy, melodic sound. The Def Jam artist reflects on trying to reconnect with someone he once took for granted, using color references like red and blue to paint a vivid picture of longing and regret.

If you’re looking for fresh, high-quality R&B to add to your rotation, you’ll find plenty to love in the playlist above.
