Billie Eilish came close to cutting Birds of a Feather from her album

Billie Eilish has revealed that she almost decided not to release her hit song Birds of a Feather because she thought it was “stupid.”

The track, which appears on her third studio album Hit Me Hard and Soft, has since become one of her biggest successes. In a profile published on Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, Eilish admitted that she came close to removing the song from the final tracklist.

“Multiple times I was like, ‘We should cut this,’” she recalled.

Eilish and her brother Finneas spent nearly a year perfecting the song in the studio as she debated whether it was worth including on the album.

The singer said she was still unsure about the track even when she played the finished album for her label.

“Even when I played the whole album for the label, I was like, ‘Guys, this one is kind of stupid,’” she explained.

Despite her doubts, Birds of a Feather went on to top the Billboard Global 200 for three weeks. The upbeat love song, a departure from Eilish’s darker sound, became Spotify’s most-streamed song of 2024 with 1.781 billion plays and has now surpassed three billion streams.

Eilish is currently wrapping up the final leg of her Hit Me Hard and Soft world tour, which will conclude in November.

The 23-year-old began touring in September last year and shared that she prefers to take breaks between shows, even if it slows down the schedule.

“It takes longer, and you make less money that way. But for me, it’s magical,” she said.

Birds of a Feather serves as the closing song in her current tour setlist.
