Dave Grohl has shared that Foo Fighters have wrapped up work on their next studio album, revealing it was completed “the other day”.
The update came last night January 24 when the band kicked off the Australian run of their ‘Take Cover’ tour at UTAS Stadium in Launceston, Tasmania. During the encore, they performed ‘Exhausted’ from their self titled 1995 debut, and Grohl took the opportunity to let fans in on the news as he introduced the song.
“We’ll be back here sooner than you think,” he told the Australian crowd. “I know when we’re coming back! It is before my next birthday [January 14, 2027], just so you know.”
He then added: “And we might have a whole new record of fucking songs that we just finished the other day. I dunno!”
Their most recent studio release was ‘But Here We Are’ in 2023, which marked the band’s first album following the deaths of drummer Taylor Hawkins and Grohl’s mother Virginia. NME awarded the record five stars, describing it as “a beautiful, noisy celebration of brotherhood and a stark, painful exploration of loss”, adding that it is “messy, gut wrenching, ambitious and gorgeous” as the band push themselves further than ever before.
In 2025, Foo Fighters marked 30 years together with the release of the single ‘Today’s Song’, before following it up with ‘Asking For A Friend’. They later hinted at what comes next by sharing a fiery teaser in October alongside the message, “about to take flight…”.
The band also dropped a new live release, documenting their recent run of intimate club performances. The six track album, ‘Are Playing Where??? Vol. I’, was made available exclusively via Bandcamp in October.
The ‘Take Cover’ tour itself began earlier this month in Mexico, though guitarist Pat Smear has been absent from some dates after suffering a broken foot in what he described as a “bizarre gardening accident”.
Foo Fighters are also set to return to the UK and Europe this summer, with two headline shows booked at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium on June 25 and 27. Festival appearances at Mad Cool, Pinkpop and others are also on the schedule.
Support on select dates will come from Royel Otis, Inhaler, IDLES, Otoboke Beaver, Fat Dog and Die Spitz. Full dates can be found here, with tickets available here. The band have also confirmed plans for a North American stadium tour in 2026.
