Artist Spotlight: Beck Martin
Growing up, Beck Martin’s mother worked at Supraphon, the legendary Prague-based record label, where stories of aspiring artists submitting demo CDs left a lasting impression and inspired him to pursue music seriously. With “It’s About Friday Night,” Beck Martin is making those dreams come true.
In this exclusive Q&A, Beck Martinopens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
BH Review: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Beck Martin: Thank you for asking. I love working out, and I am a qualified level 3 personal trainer. Also, I am passionately interested in world events and politics. Music, in my opinion, is an important aspect of politics because it can influence nations and cultures all over the world in a bad or a good way. I also wrote a few books prior to X Factor.
BH Review: How do you stay grounded amidst the pressures of fame and success?
Beck Martin: I stay grounded by having active faith and praying quite often to a higher being. I remind myself that I am part of something huge that, in a sense, makes me feel like an ant. Occasionally, I would go barefoot on the ground to remain grounded.
BH Review: What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day of recording or performing?
Beck Martin: I love to have a bath. Nice hot warm bath where I can just lie down and get soaked in the hot water. Also, other activities after 10 PM. I do love that.
BH Review: What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned from your career?
Beck Martin: The most important lesson that I have learned through the years is to appreciate people who are excited and happy to help with stuff and are genuinely happy for your success. I also learned not to allow anyone to drag me down to their level. Like, for example, did you know that I went to the X Factor audition by myself and did not audition until 1:30 AM? Imagine I'd not go because nobody went with me. There would be no Mr. Friday Night.
BH Review: How do you define happiness and fulfillment in your life and career?
Beck Martin: Joy and happiness, as well as fulfillment, are when my work is being appreciated, loved, and spread around the world. I genuinely hope that this is the year of a great breakthrough. It would make me truly happy. To hear my song is being played everywhere, as well as the music video. Being all over the press is another fulfillment in my career.
BH Review: How do you handle the pressure of public expectations and maintain your sense of self?
Beck Martin: My family - my brother Adam, as well as my friend David are helping me to maintain the sense of self by keeping me grounded. The pressure of public expectations is handled by making sure that I always do and perform my best. Mistakes do happen, and I try to learn from them too. Great question.
BH Review: Have you ever had a dream to inspire a song or an album?
Beck Martin: That would be great to be an inspiration for a song or an entire album. I would most likely feel like a sweetener.
BH Review: What message or themes do you hope to convey through your music?
Beck Martin: I hope to convey the messages of love, hope, high energy, joy, happiness, take you to the dreamy like landscape you never want to leave. I have my secret plan about music needed for occasions - like a gap in the market kind of a thing - fingers crossed it all works out.
BH Review: Do you have a dream director or visual artist you’d love to work with?
Beck Martin: I dream of many collaborations, I will make a big name for myself, and will be able to work and collaborate with the best names in the industry. Can't name anyone specific, because there are plenty of great artists and directors. It would also be about them having me, so I hope that will be true one day.
BH Review: Are there any upcoming projects or releases you’re excited about?
Beck Martin: I am excited about my Ibiza summer track - I hope it's gonna do great, sound great, and it will have great visuals. I hope I will be able to catch the "Never want to leave vibe". I hope and aim to have a new album done by the end of the year, fingers crossed. An album that is going to elevate me to A star celebrity, I wish, let's work for it and make it happen.
