The Wiggles drew plenty of attention online after admitting during an Australian radio interview that they are not very familiar with Oasis, with one moment even leading to the Britpop legends being mistaken for The Beatles.
The conversation happened while Anthony Field and Lucia Field, the father and daughter pair currently performing together as the Blue Wiggles, appeared on Nova 96.9’s Ricki-Lee & Tim. During a segment where guests had to identify famous tracks, the hosts played Oasis’ 1995 anthem “Wonderwall,” which Lucia immediately admitted she did not recognize.
“Controversially, I like Blur more … that is why I have no idea,” Lucia explained, referencing the famous Britpop rivalry between Oasis and Blur.
The reaction immediately caught the hosts off guard, with Tim Blackwell replying, “No! That is gonna go everywhere.”
Anthony also confessed that his own understanding of Oasis is not exactly strong, sharing a funny story from a past trip to Abbey Road Studios with his son.
“I bought him what I thought was a Paul McCartney and John Lennon poster and he said, ‘They’re the guys from Oasis,’” Anthony joked. “I am so out of touch mate.”
Even with the mix up, Anthony still knew one of the band’s most recognizable songs, adding, “I know they had a song called ‘Wonderwall.’”
The interview comes as Oasis continue to experience a huge comeback in popularity thanks to their highly anticipated reunion tour, which has sparked massive demand worldwide and sold out stadium shows across several continents. Fronted by brothers Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher, the band became one of the biggest rock acts of the 1990s, earning eight No. 1 albums in the U.K. and releasing classics like “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” and “Champagne Supernova.”
“Wonderwall” remains Oasis’ biggest success in the United States, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1996 while also topping the Alternative Airplay chart.
At the same time, The Wiggles have continued growing far beyond children’s entertainment, teaming up with artists from pop, country, and rock while also building a loyal adult fanbase through festival performances and viral crossover appearances.
The group joined the Nova show to promote their latest single, “Sparkle.”
