Jay Electronica is once again adding to the A Written Testimony universe. The rapper and producer from New Orleans has returned with Mars, The Inhabited Planet, the fourth installment in the series. Fans have been caught off guard by the sudden flood of music, as all of these projects have been released within just three days.
The JAY-Z collaborator kicked off this streak on Thursday, September 18, with Act II: The Patents of Nobility (the turn). For his 49th birthday, he followed up with Power At The Rate Of My Dreams and Leaflets. After a quiet five years, it’s still not clear why the often-mysterious MC decided to reemerge.
Some believe the burst of activity is tied to celebrating his 49th year of life. Others wonder if it signals the beginning of a fresh chapter in his career. Whatever the motivation may be, what matters most is that fans finally have new music to enjoy.
Mars, The Inhabited Planet continues Jay Electronica’s spiritual and religious themes, while also featuring contributions from acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan, who add spoken word interludes throughout the project.
On first impressions, nothing seems especially shocking, aside from the experimental production choices Jay Electronica has always leaned into. As for the lyrics, there are still standout details. On Leaflets, he even reveals that he once lived with Diddy, a surprising personal confession woven into the mix.
