Massive Attack are set to make their long awaited return to Australia, announcing their first headline tour in the country since 2010 with three arena shows scheduled for August in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.
The influential Bristol group, fronted by Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, will perform at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on August 6, Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on August 9, and Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on August 11.
Presented by Frontier Touring, the upcoming concerts will be the band's first Australian appearances in 16 years. Frontier Members will gain access to a presale beginning June 4 at 2 p.m. local time, while tickets go on sale to the general public on June 5 at 3 p.m. local time through frontiertouring.com/massiveattack.
The tour announcement follows the release of Massive Attack’s latest collaboration with Tom Waits, “Boots on the Ground.” The track marks the group’s first new music in quite some time and highlights that the pioneering act remains creatively engaged more than 30 years after emerging from Bristol’s Wild Bunch sound system scene.
Very few artists have had the same impact on modern music as Massive Attack. Their groundbreaking debut album Blue Lines, released in 1991 and widely credited with helping establish the trip hop genre, reached No. 13 on the UK Albums Chart. Over the years, it has also earned a place on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The group's third studio album Mezzanine, released in 1998, climbed to No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and delivered standout tracks including “Teardrop,” later known worldwide as the theme song for the American television series House, along with “Angel.” Both songs remain defining releases of the period. Mezzanine also became the band’s highest charting release in the United States, reaching No. 60 on the Billboard 200, and has sold more than 3.5 million copies globally.
Their fourth album 100th Window arrived in 2003 and also secured the top spot on the UK Albums Chart, giving Massive Attack a second U.K. chart topping album. Their fifth and latest studio release, Heligoland, followed in 2010, coinciding with their most recent Australian tour, and entered the U.K. Albums Chart at No. 2.
Massive Attack concerts have earned a reputation for being among the most immersive live experiences in music. Their performances combine powerful visual production, thought provoking political themes, custom designed audio visual elements, and creative partnerships with figures such as Adam Curtis, United Visual Artists, and Robert Del Naja’s own visual art projects.
