ATLANTA - I Am Tha 3rd Day is not shy. Just look at his latest album’s cover. For this songwriter/performer and producer, he is a one-person band in the studio, and his perfection is evident on each of the 17 tracks on “Not Like Me.”
Dropping on Feb. 14, “Not Like Me” is a two-year labor of love. “The album has a vibe that touches different levels of recording. It is about being comfortable with yourself instead of taking what everyone else wants you to be. You take what you are,” he said. “I’m comfortable with myself, but there’s many layers. Naked or fully clothed, I am going to be who I am. Nobody else is going to be like me; it’s scientifically proven. There is only one of me.”
When asked to describe his sound, I Am Tha 3rd Day said, “Think of the lead singer of Nickelback going to DMX to Jay-Z. I have a raspy rock’ n roll voice, but I like to rap and tell stories.”
“Not Like Me” is a journey for listeners. Like a movie, the opening tracks are the LP’s opening credits that move to the rising action. Next is the climax, followed by a slow down until the final resolution on the last track. “If you’re judging an album by the cover, it’s a pretty good album,” he said. “From start to finish the moment you put it on, it’s attractive to the ear and very groovy-like with different elements.”
Utilizing witty hooks and rhythmic lyrics, the album is packed with soon-to-be hits. “Gotdamn,” “Type A,” and “Slow It Down” are three standouts.
“Gotdamn” focuses on the brown struggle and “people who are less fortunate from where I come from. Regardless of how life throws that curveball, you still come back,” he explained. “Gotdamn” showcases I Am Tha 3rd Day’s rap ‘n roll style creating an upbeat, empowerment song that focuses on how the struggle makes people stronger.
Giving fans a glimpse into the man, “Type A” defines I Am Tha 3rd Day’s past through his own eyes. “I’ve witnessed a lot of people who show love and then witnessed even more people who’s cold-hearted. They are not necessarily bad people. It’s just that they become a product of their environment, just as I was,” he stated. “You can never satisfy everybody. That’s why you only try to satisfy yourself.”
“Slow It Down” ft. Lady Precious is a sentimental look on taking a relationship to the next level, especially when pumping the brakes will create a stronger bond over time. Like Busta Rhymes and Mariah Carey’s “I Know What You Want,” I Am Tha 3rd Day and Lady Precious create a sweet and salty combination that gets to the heart of wondering when to push forward and when to slow down in matters of the heart.
Formerly known as Yitti Hustla, he changed his name to I Am Tha 3rd Day after seeking validation for his musical prowess and finding none. “The first chance they got, they left me and turned on me,” he said. “I’m just a man that comes back as a different person. It’s kinda like the resurrection of Yitti Hustla - I Am Tha 3rd Day.”
